              A National Repository facility for filarial parasites and reagents is set up with the support from DBT. Brugia malayi filarial infection in rodents mastomys and jirds and a filarial sera bank with a collection of about 300 sera of different clinical groups of bancroftian filariasis from various endemic regions are being maintained.

Animal house:

There is an independent CPCSEA registered animal house of about 1800 sq. ft area housing about 200

  Mastomys natalensis (Swiss rats) & 200 Meriones unguiculatus (Desert rats) as filarial animal models and

  50 Balb/c mice (for hybridoma technique) and few rabbits for raising antisera.

Insectarium:

This is a breeding and rearing facility for Aedes aegypti (Liverpool black eye strain) mosquito colony to be used as vector for transmission of B. malayi infection to Mastomys & jirds.

Database Facilities Available

  Filarial & tubercular Serum bank database:

Database has been formulated with access for the detailed information on parameters mentioned below for 319

  sera samples of Filarial serum bank established as a part of National Repository established at JBTDRC

  with the support from DBT. It incudes a collectin of sera of different groups of filarial cases viz.

   microfilaraemia, different grades of chronic cases, acute filariasis and occult filarial cases.

Database on Filarial & tubercular Cases (Adults & Children) across the clinical spectrum:

Database has been created on filarial cases of both adults and children and tubercular cases referred from

  Kasturba Hospital and private practitioners to screen for filarial or tubercular infection. The objective is to

  provide information on the following parameters of each individual case and data pertaining to region wise

  clinical manifestations, age and sex wise manifestations, data related to a particular type of clinical

  manifestation, filarial / tubercular antigen and antibody positivity in different groups, duration of drug treatment

  required for different clinical groups etc. It is also planned to develop database on Medical Information on

  diagnosis and management of certain diseases commonly present in our country, in a tertiary referral hospital

  such as MGIMS located in a rural area.
