1936

Bapu sets Ashram at Sevagram.

 

1938

Dr. Sushila Nayar joins Bapu at Sevagram.

 

1942

Dr. Sushila Nayar gets MD, joins Quit India Movement.

 

1944

A 15-beded Kasturba Hospital is started in the Guest House built by Late Shri G.D. Birla for Bapu's guests. This was the only hospital ever started by Gandhiji.

 

1945

ANM training worked out and started at Kasturba Hospital.

 

1964

On 11th September 1964 administrative control of Kasturba Hospital handed over to Kasturba Health Society under the stewardship of Dr. Sushila Nayar, then Union Health Minister with an endowment of Rs. 10 lakhs by Gandhi Smarak Nidhi, New Delhi.

1969

Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences started as the first rural medical college in the country. Foundation stone of the Institute laid by Shri Morarji Desai.

1971

Institute's building construction and development on the grant of Rs. 2 crores from USAID. Further development through public donation. Recurring expenditure shared between Government of India, Government of Maharashtra & Kasturba Health Society in ratio of 50:25:25.

 

1973

Kasturba Nursing School started.

 

1974

Lal Bahadur Shastri Teaching Complex & Rajkumari Amrit Kaur Gynaecology & Obstetrics wing of Kasturba Hospital inaugurated by Dr Karan Singh, then Union Minister of Health and Family Planning and Smt Yashodhara Karan Singh respectively.

 

1977

The Institute gains recognition for postgraduate and postdoctoral studies under Nagpur University.

 

1978

New Hospital Complex, Sushruta Block and Dr. B.C. Roy Block inaugurated by Shri Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, then President of India, Shri Sadiq Ali, then Governor of Maharashtra and Shri Vasant Dada Patil, then Chief Minister of Maharashtra respectively.

 

1979

Recognition for postgraduate and postdoctoral studies extended to most of the departments.

 

1991

Foundation stone for the Tropical Disease Research Centre laid by Shri. Chandrashekhar, then Prime Minister of India.

 

1992

Family Planning Department building inaugurated by Smt Taradevi Siddartha, then Union Minister of State for Health and FW.

 

1993

Foundation stone laid for Radio-Therapy Centre by Shri K.R. Narayanan, then Vice President of India.

 

1993

Kasturba College of Nursing inaugurated by Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, then President of India.

 

93-94

Silver Jubilee of the institute celebrated.

 

1994

Golden Jubilee of Kasturba Hospital celebrated.

 

1995

Kasturba Hospital recognized as Baby Friendly Hospital.

 

1996

Additions: (a) 40 bedded ward for Obstetrics and Gynaecology (b) Dental Surgery and Sarojini Nayadu Hall (c) Lokmanya Tilak Adhyan Mandir.

 

1996

Toxicology Laboratory started in the Department of Forensic Medicine.

 

1996

Inauguration of Radio-Therapy Centre by H.H. Rev Dalai Lama.

 

1997

Foundation stone laid for Psychiatry and De-addiction Centre by Dr. Sushila Nayar.

 

1998

Inauguration of Psychiatry and De-addiction Centre by Hon'ble Dr. P .C. Alexander, Governor of Maharashtra.

 

1999

Inauguration of Gastroenterology Centre by Dr. Manmohan Singh, Former Finance Minister, Government of India.

 

1999

Inauguration of Bioinformatics Centre by Dr. Sushila Nayar.

 

2000

Foundation Stone of Sri Sathya Sai Accident & Emergency Centre Laid by Dr. Suchila Nayar, President Kasturba Health Society.

 

2001

State of the art Medicine ICU inaugurated by Shri Dhirubhai Mehta, President, KHS.

 

2003

Inauguration of Sri Sathya Sai Accident & Emergency Centre by Shri Sharad Pawar, Member of Parliament.

 

2004

Inauguration of Kasturba Health Society's Matoshri Maniben Chandulal Maganlal Kothari Atithi Gruha.
