The Bioinformatics Centre of the Institute, established in 1999 with the support from Department of Biotechnology as a part of the National Bioinformatic Network, has made tremendous progress over the five years. It has not only equipped itself with all modern facilities but has also developed data base software for use in various departments of the institute.

Training personnel in various aspects of Bioinformatics has been an important objective of this centre and Dr. Harinath has ensured that at least one academic activity on some aspect of Bioinformatics is held every year. This years' theme on Hospital Information System is most suited to the concept of modernizing hospitals. Introducing computer technology is leading to effective and efficient outcome. There may be many stumbling blocks in the beginning but dedicated effort, proper coordination and the will to implement has shown wonderful results whereever it has been taken up in all sincerity.

MGIMS has also just started installation work on this system and this CME on Hospital Information System with the galaxy of eminent speakers will give us all an opportunity to understand, discuss and anticipate the difficulties and problems that are likely to be encountered with the system. Medical Informatics, Telemedicine, e-health are all new concepts and I would like to congratulate Dr. Harinath, Chairperson & Dr. Satish Kumar, Secretary for organizing the Symposium on Medical Informatics and CME on HIS and sensitizing all participants to the modern methodology in management of health care.

I am happy that the Proceedings are being published in a book form for distribution. I wish their efforts all the success.
