TRAINING
COURSE:
A
hands-on, short term training course for Medical teachers, Clinical Lab
Practitioners, Research & Post graduate students on ‘Immunodiagnostics for Infectious Diseases’ will be held during Feb
7-12, 2005 at the Department of Biochemistry & JB Tropical Disease
Research Centre, Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sevagram
(Wardha), Maharashtra.
COURSE
CONTENTS:
This laboratory course will provide training in
different types of enzyme immunoassays and several other sophisticated
biochemical techniques used for isolation, purification and
characterization of antigens for immunodiagnostic work in infectious
diseases, taking filariasis and tuberculosis as models. Dipstick and
plate / strip based enzyme immunoassays (indirect, sandwich & inhibition
types) for detection of disease-specific antibodies,
antigen and immune complexed antigen will be covered. Considerable
emphasis will be given on preparation of antigen coated sticks / strips,
antibody-enzyme conjugates (penicillinase and peroxidase as enzyme
markers), antibody-FITC conjugates etc. by the participants so that they
can apply these techniques in their laboratories for other diseases of
interest. The participants will be familiarized with techniques such as
salt precipitation, dialysis, ultra membrane filtration,
lyophilization, gel filtration & ion exchange chromatography,
FPLC, SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, gel diffusion, counter current
immunoelectrophoresis and immunofluorescence for isolation, analysis and
identification of antigen proteins. PCR technique will be covered to
amplify parasite gene of interest.
There will be talks on Immunodiagnostic and
Immunoprophylactic aspects of infectious diseases. The faculty of the
course will be eminent Scientists and experts actively involved in
immunodiagnostic research at this Institute as well from other National
Institutes.

ABOUT
SEVAGRAM, MGIMS & JBTDRC:
Sevagram
was the de facto capital of
India during the struggle for Independence. In 1936, Gandhiji identifying
himself with poorest of the poor, settled in the remote village of Segaon
rechristined as ‘Sevagram’. The crucial meetings of the ‘Congress
Working Committee’ were held here and the ‘Quit India’ resolution
was passed in July 1942 at Sevagram.
MGIMS:
Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (MGIMS)
located in rural setting within 5 min. walking distance from Gandhi
Ashram, is the First Rural Medical Institute in India established in 1969
as Gandhi Centenary Project under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Sushila
Nayar. Of 135 Medical Colleges in India surveyed, the Institute ranked 14th
in research & 18th in reputation.
JBTDRC:
Jamnalal Bajaj Tropical Disease Research Centre (JBTDRC)
is the result of sustained problem based research activity for more than
two decades at MGIMS, with support form ICMR, CSIR, DST, WHO/TDR, Indo- US
STI and DBT. JBTDRC was established in 1994 to expand the Institute’s
ongoing research programmes in tropical diseases such as filariasis and
tuberculosis prevalent in this region.
Looking
forward to welcome you at Sevagram.
