National level workshop on “Medical Informatics & Biomedical
Communication”
was held at
Bioinformatics Centre, JBTDRC & Dept. of Biochemistry, MGIMS, Sevagram
during September 29 - October 1, 2003. In the inaugural function on 29th
Dr. B.C. Harinath, Co-ordinator, giving introduction, informed that the
theme of this Workshop was to enrich the awareness of Medical Teachers &
Students towards automated Patient Information System and special skills in
biomedical communication. Acting Dean Dr.
A.P. Jain welcomed the participants and Secretary Ms. Suma Subbanna presided
over the function.
Dr. Apurba Gupta, Dy. Director & Head IT Division, NEERI, Nagpur The Chief Guest, enlightened the role of Bioinformatics in waste disposal. Dr. Sunil Shroff, Prof. & Head Urology & Renal Transplant, MGR Medical College, Chennai was Guest of Honour and delivered talk on Telemedicine and showed video demonstration on robotic surgery. Mr. S.K.D. Biswas, Dy. Director General (SG), ICMR, New Delhi, another Guest of Honour, delivered talk on Information Security and Hospital Management System.
Other Guest speakers Dr. B.C. Harinath, Director JBTDRC & Coordinator BIC, Dr. S.N. Sarbhadhikari from IIT, Kharagpur, Mr. P. Mitra from NIC, Delhi, Mr. Dhananjay Raje from NEERI & Dr. Dilip Bhale from Hingoli delivered talks on Databases of Biomedical Information of Infectious Diseases, How to Make Best Use of Medical Informatics, NICNET Services & Internet Access Technologies at a Glance, Computational Methods for Development of Gene Probes for Diagnostics and Hospital Information System respectively. Dr. K. Satyanarayana, Chief, Division of Publication & Information, ICMR and Dr. N.C. Jain, Dy Director, ICMR, New Delhi conducted a special session on Biomedical Communication covering the topics, How to Choose the Right Journal; Actual Writing: Getting Started; Grammar and Syntax in Scientific Writing; Some Important Medical Resources Available on Internet. Hands on Session was conducted on Medline Search & Database Software developed at BIC namely FilaDB, TbDB, ObSoft, GynSoft & PsySoft for recoding & retrieval of patients information related to Filariasis, Tuberculosis, Obs & Gynae and Psychiatry patients. The faculty & Students came all the way from Tamilnadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, West Bengal, Karnataka, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.
In the concluding session on October 1st Ms. Suma Subbana, Secretary, Kasturba Health Society listened to the feedback comments from the participants that the Workshop was very informative and useful with homely hospitality and appreciated the efforts of the organizers. Dr. Satish Kumar, Officer-in-charge of the Bioinformatics Centre and Workshop organiser, proposed vote of thanks.

Honourable Governor of Maharashtra Shri. Mohammad Fazal visited MGIMS, Sevagram on 28th November 2003 and inaugurated Health Care Project CLICS-Community Led Initiative for Child Survival and also visited JBTDRC.

Medicine at Rockford University of Illinois, Chicago, USA visited the Centre on
16th October, 2003 and delivered a Guest Lecture on
‘Immunoscreening of the cDNA expression library of brugia
malayi’ to identify
filarial vaccine candidates.
Team
of Medical Council of India inspected the Department of Biochemistry and was shown the various
research facilities at JBTDRC on 8th – 9th December,
2003.

18th & 19th October 2003.
Mr.
Balaji Ganesh was
awarded the GP Talwar Young Scientist Award for his oral presentation
‘Immunodiagnostic potential and immunoprophylactic studies with filarial
antigens Bm mf S2 and Bm A2-b in lymphatic filariasis’ at the 30th
Annual Conference of the Indian Immunology Society held at SGPGIMS, Lucknow from
23rd to 25th Nov, 2003.
